Why We Chose These Four Ingredients
When we formulated The Earnest Oil, we didn't start with a marketing brief — we started with a question: what do people with chronic skin conditions like hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), eczema, and psoriasis actually need from a topical product?
The answer kept coming back to the same properties: reduce inflammation, support the skin barrier, address microbial imbalance, and offer real comfort — not just moisture. Here's why we landed on comfrey, arnica, goldenseal, and clove, and what each one brings to the formula.
Comfrey: The Cell-Renewal Botanical
Comfrey (Symphytum officinale) has been used in traditional medicine for centuries, often called "knitbone" for its tissue-healing reputation. Modern research has focused on its primary active compound: allantoin.
Allantoin is a keratolytic agent — it gently loosens dead skin cells, promotes cell regeneration, and helps skin rebuild its protective surface. This makes comfrey particularly valuable for:
- Eczema patches where the barrier is broken and rebuilding
- Psoriatic plaques that need softening and surface renewal
- HS-affected skin that needs regenerative support between flares
Clinical studies on allantoin-containing preparations have shown significant improvements in skin hydration, elasticity, and the appearance of inflamed tissue.
Arnica: Nature's Anti-Inflammatory
Arnica (Arnica montana) is one of the best-studied botanicals for topical anti-inflammatory use. Its active compounds — sesquiterpene lactones, particularly helenalin — inhibit nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB), a key driver of inflammatory signaling in the skin.
In practical terms, this means arnica can:
- Reduce redness and swelling in active flares
- Ease the tenderness associated with HS nodules
- Calm the surface irritation of psoriatic and eczematous skin
It's important to note: arnica should be used on unbroken skin only. It is not for open wounds. Used correctly, it's a powerful anti-inflammatory without systemic side effects.
Goldenseal: The Antimicrobial Ally
Goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis) contains berberine, an alkaloid compound with well-documented antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Berberine has been shown to inhibit a wide range of bacteria and fungi — which matters enormously for skin conditions where microbial dysbiosis plays a role.
For HS sufferers especially, bacterial colonization (particularly Staphylococcus aureus and anaerobic bacteria) can drive recurring abscesses. A topical ingredient with natural antimicrobial action addresses this without the resistance risks associated with long-term antibiotic use.
Goldenseal also contributes anti-inflammatory effects, making it a dual-purpose ingredient that earns its place in a condition-focused formula.
Clove: Relief and Protection
Clove (Syzygium aromaticum) is most famous as a dental remedy — and that's because eugenol, its primary active compound, is a well-established analgesic and antimicrobial agent. Applied to skin, clove oil:
- Provides localized numbing relief from itching and pain
- Offers antimicrobial protection against bacteria and fungi
- Contributes antioxidant protection against environmental skin stressors
For people dealing with the chronic discomfort of HS, the itch of eczema, or the soreness of psoriasis, this pain-relieving property isn't a bonus — it's essential.
What These Ingredients Have in Common
Beyond their individual properties, these four botanicals share something important: they've all been used for generations, studied by modern researchers, and shown to have real mechanisms of action — not just tradition behind them. They work without synthetic chemistry, without hormonal disruption, and without the tachyphylaxis that makes pharmaceutical options less effective over time.
That's the foundation of The Earnest Oil — and it's why we believe in this approach for people who've tried everything else.
How to Use Them
The Earnest Oil delivers all four of these botanicals in a carrier oil base designed for sensitive, reactive skin. Apply a few drops to clean skin in affected areas, allow to absorb, and use consistently for best results. As with any botanical product, patch test first if you have known sensitivities.
